Toxins and household products to avoid when trying to fall pregnant

There comes a time in most woman's lives when they long to start a family. I know from experience that trying to fall pregnant isn't as easy as it's made out to be. The endless months of trying and negative pregnancy tests begin to take its toll, and it seems almost impossible, but trust me, there are a few lifestyle changes you can make to help the dream become a reality.

When trying to conceive, many household products can prevent the journey being as smooth as you’d like it to be. I understand how overwhelming it can be, so to try and help I’ve popped together a comprehensive list of household products to avoid for at least three months before trying to conceive and when a few to avoid whilst pregnant.

Parabens in cosmetics + beauty products

When trying to conceive, it’s worth taking into account what make-up and cosmetics you’re using. Read labels and avoid anything that has the word “paraben" in it. Some examples include:

  • Methylparaben

  • Proplyparaben

  • Isopropylparaben

  • Isobutylparaben

  • Butylparaben

  • Sodium butylparaben

Parabens are a type of preservative that prevents bacteria growth, but they can mimic certain characteristics of estrogen so they can reduce your chances of creating healthy eggs.

BPA in plastic containers + cans

BPA & phthalates found in plastic are some of the most dangerous chemicals out there when it comes to male and female fertility.

BPA & phthalates are endocrine disruptors that are linked to decreased fertility in men and women. Many then opt for BPA-free plastic...but this does not mean they are free of endocrine disruptors.

Here's what you can do to avoid BPA:

  • Don't microwave plastic food containers. Over time they may break down from overuse at high temperatures and release BPA.

  • Check the recycle codes on the bottom of plastic containers. Some (but not all) plastics that are marked with recycle codes 3 or 7 may be made with BPA.

  • Reduce your use of canned foods.

Try this: When possible, opt for glass, porcelain or stainless steel containers, particularly for hot food or liquids. Instead of canned beans, buy dry beans and soak them yourself.

Heavy Metals

Heavy metal like lead, aluminum, nickel, and more have a direct impact on the development of your baby. Exposure to these types of neurotoxic metals can cause a multitude of issues.

Always make sure that you are drinking filtered water to avoid any lead contamination from your water pipes. If you’re not sure whether or not your tap water is safe, I’d advise on drinking bottled water instead.

Harsh Cleaners

Many of our everyday cleaning products contain a lot of toxins and chemicals which can wreak havoc on fertility and affect the healthy development of a fetus. Instead, opt for green, natural alternatives, which can be found in many supermarkets and bio stores.

Hair Dyes

While a lot of people get their hair dyed and think nothing of it, hair dye actually contains a lot of toxic chemicals. When applied, the hair dye can absorb into your bloodstream via your scalp.

To keep your body free of heavy toxins when trying to conceive and when pregnant, it’s best to avoid dying your hair and if you really need to, try more natural alternatives like vegetable-based dyes.


Acetone has been shown to cause long-term effects on fertility, so it should be avoided when trying to conceive. This doesn’t mean you can never paint your nails again, it’s just worth double-checking the ingredients list of your nail polish remover.

House Paint

House paint has a huge effect on your body. House paint, paint thinner, and other painting supplies contain high levels of lead and mercury, which put you at a higher risk of miscarrying and increase the likelihood of physical and mental birth defects.

Best to get the baby-daddy painting the nursery!

This may seem extremely overwhelming, I completely understand that, so my best advice to you would be to read the labels and make small changes where you can. It’s also recommended to reduce the amount of chemicals that you’re exposed to in foods by eating whole, nutritious foods and avoiding overly processed things.
